AROUND THE WORLD AND GO VEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2007 AS
PART OF THE GLOBAL MALA PROJECT
NEW YORK (NY) As part of the world-wide Global Mala Project, Jivamukti Yoga Schools around the world are asking its practitioners and friends to Go Vegan for World Peace! Join Sting, Trudie Styler, noted philanthropist Bobby Sager, Donna Karan, Russell Simmons, environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill and Jivamukti creators Sharon Gannon and David Life who have all pledged to be vegan on Friday, September 21, 2007 - the United Nations International Day of Peace. Besides programs at their schools in Detroit, Toronto, London and Munich, Jivamukti’s New York City flagship school in Union Square has organized three days of “Go Vegan For World Peace” Global Mala Project fundraisers benefiting Circle of Life and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) – two organizations whose work have influenced awareness regarding the deteriorating state of our planet.
On September 21 – 23, 2007, Jivamukti will join other yogic institutions around the world for the Global Mala Project, a program to unite the yogic community “through collective practices based on the sacred cycle of 108.” 108 is also the number of prayer beads strung together to form a mala. Created by Shiva Rea, the project, which also coincides with the Fall Equinox, offers a unique opportunity to create awareness and raise funds for organizations that impact our society.
According to the United Nations, the waste emissions from animals raised for food contributes more to global warming than all the car and truck emissions in the world. Whether you go vegan on September 21st or extend that pledge to a week, a month, a year or a lifetime, each person’s commitment will further peace, help save the planet, and change lives.
“The best way to uplift our own lives is to do all we can to uplift the lives of others,” says Jivamukti Yoga co-creator Sharon Gannon. “By being a vegan we not only reduce fear and terror in our own bodies and minds, but we allow our true heart’s song to sing, radiating peace and joy into the hearts of others and into the world around us which is our greater heart.”
See how one day can make a difference by going vegan on September 21st. Celebrate this vow at a fundraiser focusing on Spiritual Activation through Veganism. Hosted by Gannon and Life, Russell Simmons, Julia Butterfly Hill (Circle of Life) and Tracy Reiman (PETA) will also be on hand for an evening featuring yoga, mantra mediation, speeches, films and information sharing. Reflecting the beads of the mala, the sacred number 108 will be woven throughout the program as participants perform 108 sun salutations and chants for world peace. A concluding party will feature a delectable feast offered by some of NYC’s most renowned vegan restaurants and music from electro-world music dj impresario Fabian Alsultany.
Saturday September 22nd features a special Dance of Liberation in celebration of the Global Mala Project hosted by New York Yoga magazine founder Mark Becker and led by Shamanic Healer Parashakti. Participants are invited to join Becker, Parashakti, and the Gatekeepers for a Dance of Liberation that celebrates the preservation of all beings through veganism.
The three-day fundraiser concludes on Sunday September 23rd with a special brunch and lecture from Vegan Guide to New York author Rynn Berry which will educate and prepare those looking to transition to a vegan lifestyle.
The September 21st Spiritual Activation through Vegamism event takes place from 6:30 PM to midnight and tickets are $108. The September 22nd Dance of Liberation takes place from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM and the September 23rd vegan brunch and lecture with Rynn Berry is from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Tickets for both of these days events are $27 (a derivative of the sacred number 108). All events take place at Jivamukti Yoga School which is located at 841 Broadway (between 13th and 14th Streets) in New York City.
