Durga Devi the name given to Denise by her beloved teachers,
Sharon Gannon and David Life, is a former dancer & competitive
gymnast who grew up in NY city. After high school, she studied
fashion design at the fashion institute of technology and hung out
in Manhattan's east village, soaking up the downtown music and art
scene, which inspired her to become a singer /song writer. Durga
spent over 10 years performing as a lead singer for several bands
most recently Lady Luck, which released an EP and a full length
album and toured Europe and the US. Several close friends introduced
Durga to yoga in 1992. Asana practice felt very natural to the former
gymnast, but it was the chanting the philosophy and the ancient and
holy teachings of yoga the really hit home.
Durga has been a devoted student at the Jivamukti Yoga Center in NYC
for over 13 years and taught at the centre for 3 years and is currently
living in London teaching at the Jivamukti centre in London. in addition
to her Jivamukti teacher training and advanced certification, she
completed teacher training at the laughing lotus yoga centre in NYC.
Durga is especially inspired by Sharon and David Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa,
Amma, John Friend, Yogeswari, Uma Nanda Saraswati and Joan Suval, direct
disciple of Shri Brahmananda Saraswati, kirtan training with Jai Uttal
inspires her chanting which is a very important component in her teaching.
She is also inspired by Bhagavan Das and Krishna Das for opening up the
doors of bhakti uniting song and heart. all of her teacher have brought
many blessing to her life for which she is truly grateful, and she will
continuer to inspire ;and uplift the lives of all whom she teaches.
Class description:
"Whenever we enter into the heart we're all
immediately in the same place together" - Krishna Das If we continuously try to
control our lives it creates tension, fear and anxiety but if we are able to
truly let go of the outcome we can then create space and miracles can happen!
We all just need to surrender. Surrender is not about being weak, it is about
becoming larger and more part of the whole. These practices can then help us to
connect to a deeper, softer and gentle place in our hearts. Letting go can be very
scary and painful but once we start to free ourselves we can then move on to create
other realities that are more peaceful, joyful and fulfilling. No matter what the
circumstances, if you can learn to love it, you can free yourself from it and move
forward on your journey.
