Nahdi DeviNahdi was born in New Orleans and raised in Mexico City. Since childhood, her passion for music, dance and all forms of Art has guided her along life's journey and led her to New York City.
In the summer of 2005 Nahdi came to Jivamukti. Her first teacher, Narayani Nichols, instantly inspired her to study the practical and devotional methods of Yoga. From Karma Yoga to teacher training, Nahdi was a scholarship student sponsored by her friend and mentor, Russell Simmons. She is ever grateful to God, our Higher Power, to have studied at the feet of Sharon Gannon and David Life in the training of 2007.
Fully equipping their students with the foundations of proper alignment, Sharon and David have mastered the technique of sequencing Vinyasa. There is anatomical reason to every posture and transition but the key to becoming a masterful teacher is in providing the experience of God's grace through the practice. Under the tireless apprenticeship of her beloved teacher, Yogeswari, Nahdi began to understand the Power of Surrender. As a dancer, an activist and world-renowned Yoga extraordinaire, Yogeswari, a true Asana technician, taught her to be humble and quick. She is grateful to Carlos Menjivar, Narayani, Cassandra, Lady Ruth, Jules, Maria Preuster, Rima, Umananda Saraswati, Kelly Britton and Monica for teaching, loving and embracing her. As a community we are growing closer each day.
Nahdi's class is a blend of hip-hop with a twist of traditional bhajans and Dub Step. Bhakti, the practice of pure devotion, guides the class through Mantra, Vinyasa Krama and Meditation. Pranayama, Standing postures, Balancing on your hands and forearms warms the body for deep Backbends and hip opening sequences but the real Yoga is the settling of the mind into silence. Make every posture an offering to the Divine and through each breath you will find Peace inside. Through Self Knowledge and constant practice we can transform into healthy, conscious and vibrant beings! We come together in these rooms to love, laugh, learn and have fun in getting to know our self and others in a supportive space.
See you on the mat.
